5 Things To Do This Memorial Day Weekend

I am having a hard time believing that Memorial Day weekend is almost here, where on earth has the time gone this year? Memorial Day is a time we should honor those who gave up their life to protect our freedom. A time of reflection on the great sacrifice these men and women gave for all of us Americans. In addition, to honoring our fallen hero’s it marks the beginning of summer for most of us.  This could be good news or bad news depending on how you feel the kids being out of school for the next 3 months.  I know I always enjoyed the kids being home for summer and am probably just as sad as they are on the first day of school.

Now on to the big question, how can you start off your summer this Memorial Day weekend.  Typically I spend it being lazy at home and doing absolutely nothing, and that is very unexciting.  So this year I came up with a list of things I am going to try this Memorial Day weekend and thought I would share my ideas with you.  I already feel sorry for my fiance as I am going to drag him along.  Sorry, babe!

Go watch a baseball game

I am definitely going to a baseball game Memorial Day weekend even if our local team is not winning this year.  There is nothing better than watching a little baseball, sipping on my beer of choice and sitting in the sun enjoying the weather.  To be honest, just enjoying a beautiful day outside is my favorite reason to go to a baseball game.  Fingers crossed that the weather agrees with my plans.  I am NOT a cold weather fan.

I put together a few fun style ideas to wear to a baseball game  Baseball Style For Your Memorial Day Weekend.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

Take a bike ride

We recently purchased ad couple of Cannondale bikes so we can hopefully get out and get some exercise this summer.  I know we have big plans to get some miles in over Memorial Day weekend.  Luckily our area has a large network of bike trails that we can ride and explore different areas of town.

If you don’t have a bike you can always rent one.  I know some downtown areas have bikes you can rent for a minimal fee or even some of our local bikes shops rent them as well.  So no more excuses, get out and take a ride!

Build a campfire and make tin foil dinners

This is something that I have always wanted to do.  I currently do a version of tin foil dinners in my oven but I have never had the chance to do it over the campfire aka fire pit.  That my friends is about to change over Memorial Day weekend.

My version of tin foil dinners

Disclaimer – I am not a food photographer so please excuse my picture.

  • red potatoes (2 per person)
  • Additional vegetables as desired (pictured above is zucchini and yellow squash)

Beef patties (makes 6)

  • 1.5 lb ground beef (I use 90%)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 TBSP of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp of salt (you can always add more according to your tastes)
  • 1/2 tsp of pepper
  • small onion finely chopped

Slice red potatoes into thin slices.  Place in the bottom of a pie tin (I prefer using these) or on top of a large piece of aluminum foil.

Mix together the ingredients for the beef patties.  Divide into 6 portions and make into 1-inch patties.  Place patties on top of sliced potatoes.   Sprinkle seasoning salt or any seasoning of your choice over the top of the potatoes and beef patty.  Drizzle everything with olive oil.    Cover pie tin with aluminum foil or if just using foil, wrap and crimp the edges tightly.   Place over hot coals for 35 to 40 minutes or until potatoes are tender and the meat is cooked through.

Movie night

One of the nights I am planning an outdoor movie night.  This can be done by purchasing an inexpensive projector and displaying the movie on any flat surface outdoors, such as a fence or garage. after the sun goes down.  I think the garage will work best for me.

Check out these inexpensive projectors, I am trying to decide which one I want to purchase.  Any thoughts?

or maybe something like this

For seating, I am going to provide blankets and pillows that people can spread out on the ground.  If they want they can bring their own chair or outdoor lounge of their choice.

As for refreshments, I will pop up a big batch of popcorn with a bunch of butter, of course.  Other ideas could be to have everyone bring a dish of their choice to share and have a potluck of sorts.

This may be something we will have to try and do throughout the summer with various movie themes.

A good old fashion grill out

Well, I am ashamed to admit that I have not pulled out my grill yet and dusted off the cobwebs.  I really have no excuse since we have had numerous beautiful spring days that I could have taken care of it.  Maybe I should do that before the weekend gets here.

mmmmm doesn’t that look delicious!

My plans for my grill out are to have my kids home for dinner, that is if they are brave enough.  I will be honest I have no grilling skills, it normally turns out overcooked and possibly even charred.  Whoops!  Hopefully, you are a better griller than I am and can invite your family and friends.

My menu will be pretty much what is pictured above but maybe with the addition of campfire potatoes.

Now that I have decided what we are doing this Memorial Day weekend, I now need to plan what I will wear for all the fun activities I have planned.

I would love to hear what you think of my plans, and what you have planned for your Memorial Day weekend.

Smiles,

Jody
